I recently looked back at early drafts of HOST for fun and to see my progress as a writer. One thing that stood out to me was my settings and descriptions of various elements. They were…terrible? Non-existent? Not important? All of the above. It took a few drafts for me to add in that spice, those details that pull a reader in. I know I’m still missing it in areas and even the spots where I added those highlights it could be better. Still have a lot to learn but recognizing that my settings needed more than the four walls and a light description, they needed to be described with the senses of the character and what it’s important to them in the moment. My descriptions needed a punch that a simile or metaphor could bring, but these are just tools of craft to build upon. I get into more examples and failures in the latest Writer Syndrome episode. Check it out.
